British house prices fell in March at the sharpest pace since the recession of the early 1990s, the country’s largest mortgage lender said Tuesday, raising expectations that the Bank of England would cut interest rates this week.
House prices fell by 2.5 percent in March from February, according to the Halifax house price index. The decline was more than six times as much as analysts had forecast and the largest monthly decline since September 1992.
Halifax, Britain’s largest mortgage lender, said house prices in March were still 1.1 percent higher than a year earlier. First-quarter prices fell 1.0 percent from the fourth quarter of 2007.
